Tervetuloa Suomikouluun! Welcome to the Finnish School!

The Finnish School of Washington, D.C. is a part of a worldwide network of Finnish heritage schools, supported by the Finnish government. Our mission is to help Finnish speaking families maintain the Finnish language and culture of their children. Finnish should be one of the languages spoken daily in the child's home.

Our instruction is organized around the recurring annual themes of Finnish nature, geography, history, and culture, and we also teach fine and applied arts.

At the moment Suomikoulu DC offers classes for children between ages 3 to 13. For children in their early years, our language instruction is centered on increasing their fluency in spoken Finnish; when children reach school age, they are also taught to read and write in Finnish. Therefore, as the children approach kindergarten, their language skills will be assessed to ensure that they can understand the teacher and participate in academic instruction. With classes held approximately twice a month, it is our aim to supplement, not replace, Finnish language practice taking place in the home.

Our classes take place every other Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Arlington, VA.
